the Balm: How 'Bout Them Apples?

Apples are one of my very favourite fruits and when the Balm released How ‘Bout Them Apples, I just couldn’t resist! This is actually the first product from the Balm that I’ve bought which is very strange because I’ve long admired their cute packaging and funny names. I remember the anxious wait for this palette to be delivered and then being almost too scared to touch it because it was so pretty! There isn’t anything worse than biting into an juicy, crisp apple and getting a mealy mouthful but with this palette, you don’t have to worry because every apple in it is delicious!

The Brand – the Balm

the Balm was founded by Marissa Shipman who decided that the simple, quick-fix beauty products she needed weren’t on the market. So she did what any forward-thinking woman would do and set up her own company, the Balm, to create those products. She actually started off by buying a load of “how to make cosmetics” books and started experimenting in her kitchen, so the brand has come a long way! the Balm works with a “beauty in five minutes” philosophy and a lot of their products are multi-use, just like How ‘Bout Them Apples. The brand is cruelty-free and I had to show you guys this picture from the Balm’s website because Marissa and her puppies are just too cute!

The Product – How ‘Bout Them Apples $37.95 AUD from David Jones or Adore Beauty

This palette contains six different cream shades, all named after an apple product and all featuring a delicious country hunk (some of whom look suspiciously like they’ve just come from a Village People rehearsal…..)! The shades are super creamy and have a beautiful, dewy finish. I find that they work equally well as both a lip and a cheek product but if you’re using them as a lip product, reapplication can be a pain as you have to lug the whole palette around with you. It isn’t a huge problem as the shades are relatively long-wearing on the lips and the palette is quite compact too, it’s definitely a minor issue! I find that these did take a little more work to blend as a blush and are much easier to apply as a lip colour but that’s just the nature of the cream base more than anything I think.

The shades are as follows:

Cider – This shade is a very pretty nude peach colour, it’s perfect for a more natural look.

Cobbler – Cobbler is one of my favourites from the palette, it’s a quite sheer bright red that reminds me a lot of Benefit’s Benetint.

Pie – This is a medium pink shade, it’s a great everyday-wear kind of colour. It’s been the one that I’ve stuck my grubby fingers into the most, as you can see from the photos!

Crisp – It’s like NARS Orgasm in a cream base! This is one of the shades that I definitely prefer as a blush, rather than a lip colour, it’s pretty heavy on the shimmer…. The cowboy hunk that goes with Crisp is also my favourite *blushes*

Candy  - A very pretty light but bright pink shade, Candyis great for a natural flush of colour.

Caramel – This colour is the least appealing to me in the pan, it just looks like a medium brown but holy Asian cowboy, this is amazing! It’s got a beautiful orange pop of colour once applied as is definitely the hidden gem of this palette.

KaBOOM! Cosmetics gives How ‘Bout Them Apples:

If you enjoy apples and cowboys, this is the palette for you! But seriously, it’s an amazingly versatile palette and I think the Balm have done a great job with the colour selection too, there isn’t a single shade that I don’t like which is pretty amazing. You know those eyeshadow palettes with three amazing shades and then one shade that you just think, did the colour selector have a sick day or something? Ahem, anyway, point being that this is an amazing palette and the perfect addition to any collection!

  2. Oh yeah, the Balm is always up to par with their packaging. I'm pretty keen to get my hands on one/all of the Loumanizers, they all look gorgeous but honestly, I'd try anything by the Balm! Everything looks good to me!
